Ten minutes later he emerged in full pharaoh regalia, a foam headdress with serpent on his head, a gold and bejeweled tunic hanging to his knees, lace-up sandals on his feet. In one hand he held a staff with a cobra at the top. “Wow,” my friend said, “that is fantastic.”
“Just a second,” Oliver said, pleased by the reaction, before disappearing and re-entering as Spider-Man, complete with a glove that makes web-shooting noises. Aside from the instant entertainment it provides, the costume fixation doubles as free child care. That night my friend and I were able to gossip up a storm, pausing only every so often to tell my son “Good one” each time he emerged as someone new.
