A RUN-OF-THE-MILL romantic thriller? That’s not how Oliver Stone rolls.
“Savages,” adapted from the novel by Don Winslow, had all the makings of a “heightened” romantic thriller, he says in his commentary: a California beach town; two guys (and their mutual girlfriend) who grow super-high-octane cannabis; the Mexican cartel that wants a piece of the action; violence and sex.
Sure, it would test the ratings board – “the edge of tolerance,” Stone says. Full steam ahead, anyway. “We knew we were not going out there to conquer the market.”
Thankfully, it avoids the paranoia of “JFK” and preachiness of “ Born on the Fourth of July,” but “Savages” isn't as comically black or over the top as “ Natural Born Killers ,” either. The chief reason is Taylor Kitsch (“Friday Night Lights”), Aaron Johnson ( “Kick-Ass” ) and Blake Lively (“Gossip Girl”) are three slices of white bread that clog up the story. That’s OK. John Travolta, who is great fun as a shady DEA agent; Benicio Del Toro as the cartel's muscle; and Salma Hayek as his boss take up the slack.

But it wasn't until I toured my solo show, "Nothing Left but the Smell: A Republican on Welfare"--later re-titled "The Welfare Queen"-- that I snapped and became megalomaniacal enough to start Monster Girl Movies so I could officially use the... And note how all different kinds of clogs--wooden shoes, wads of hair, these cartoon logs, and protests in the street--at their core, ALL have audacity in common.
