WHERE'S IT SAFEST TO SIT IF YOUR PLANE CRASHES?

The passengers not wearing a seat belt would have “submarined” under three rows of seats. The passengers who did not brace would have been left with brain injuries while those who did brace would have ended up with a fractured ankle after their legs buckled making it very difficult to escape. But as accident investigators point out every crash is different.

Cynthia Bir, professor of biomedical engineering at Wayne State University in Detroit, believes you should wear a seat belt and brace. “A lot of fatalities occur in aeroplane crashes because of fire,” she said.

“People die from smoke inhalation because they can’t get off the plane. If you break your leg on a plane that has crashed and there is a fire you are at a higher risk because you can’t load bear your leg and no one is going to help you.
