TROY, MICHIGAN—Nordstrom, the Seattle-based department store chain that will open its first stores in Canada in 2014, claims to have stellar customer service.

“That’s what we hang our hat on, bringing our customer service north of the border,” Nordstrom Canada president Karen McKibben said when the deal to open four locations in Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary and Vancouver was announced.

So we put it to the test. We wanted to know -- what are Canadian shoppers and retail competitors in for when Nordstrom arrives on the scene?

We picked a Nordstrom within reasonable driving distance of Toronto, in an upscale mall called The Somerset Collection, in Troy, Michigan, north of Detroit.

The mall has a Nordstrom, a Neiman Marcus, a Macy's and a Sak’s Fifth Avenue, with stores from Tiffany’s to the Gap occupying the spaces in between.

The Sak’s Fifth Avenue was filled with designer collections. Macy’s was stuffed to bursting with inventory and roughly comparable to the Bay. Neiman Marcus seemed closer to a Holt Renfrew.
