It’s not minimalism, exactly, muses third-generation furniture manufacture Erik Hansen as we walk around the Carl Hansen & Son showroom in an industrial outskirt of Copenhagen. There is, in fact, as much thought and craft in the angles of a seemingly plain chair as an ornate one. It’s here I spend the better part of an hour watching Benni Larsen, a 10-year veteran at his trade, doing a real-time demonstration and deftly weaving the seat of what has been the company’s signature product since 1949, the CH24, also known as designer Hans Wegner’s Wishbone Chair.

Clad in cotton work gloves, Larsen is armed with a tightly wound bundle of paper twine (a holdover from the Second World War, when sisal string was rationed and the company switched to paper twine in its factory).

The raw wood frame sits on a raised platform and is made of the most typical wood, 120- to 130-year-old beech that has been air dried. Using two concrete blocks as ballast, Larsen walks around the frame methodically, stringing then adjusting row upon row of tension, tying a small knot, then backing up and slackening, tightening again, his steps themselves forming the grid of an elaborate square dance. An hour and 120 meters of paper yarn later, the rush seat is complete. The factory produces about 35,000 of these Wishbone Chairs every year, Hansen mentions, and a massage therapist visits the factory weekly to help alleviate the sore muscles from the arm and hand tension required to produce them in this artisanal way.
