Following vicious attack in city, Ward proposes ban on pitbulls
WOONSOCKET - A slew of upset pit bull owners turned out Monday as the City Council considered a plan to ban the dogs from city homes and enact new laws governing how existing pit bulls are registered.
Around a dozen residents stood up to speak against the legislation, sponsored by Council President John Ward, during a half hour of public testimony.
The legislation comes on the heels of a vicious attack that left three local residents with severe bite wounds. The dog was later put down.
Owners, however, disputed the notion that the case was the norm Monday night, recommending instead that the city enforce the existing dog ordinance rather than passing new ones.
"I myself have had many, many issues with loose dogs, but none of them were pit bulls," said Lisa Paradis. "And I am a responsible owner."
According to the ordinance, which Ward said was copied directly from legislation that has been in place in Pawtucket since 2004, existing pit bulls would need to be registered and owners would have to obtain a $100,000 liability policy, in addition to other responsibilities.
